*I'm excluding myself from this theoretical connection...ok now go ahead*
I just spent the last two weeks of my walk with Jesus on earth with a couple dudes that I place pretty high on the wisdom totem pole. P.V. and P.D.T. (Pastor Viars and Paul David Tripp), I love these men (appropriately). They have a healthy streak of sarcasm that in my humble opinion pairs perfectly with that wisdom blessing God has been gracious to bestow upon them. These guys are HILARIOUS! I'm so glad God gave me the opportunity to see a glimpse of them on a personal level. Who knew learning God's truth could be so fun!?!?
In Dr. Tripp's class he made us all part of a small group "a community group" in which 5 of us worked together through some case study materials and ultimately worked on ourselves together. As we'd spend those hours together, he'd pop in on us to see how we were doing and shed some light occasionally. Today was classic. He'd constructed some very reflective questions getting at how we'd seen new darkness in our own hearts as a result of the material...in my group we'd somehow taken a bit of a trail (you know how that stuff happens) discussing Eugene Peterson (the author of the Message) and his place or lack thereof in conservative circles, at which time I had to ask them to explain to me the definitions of dispensationalism and convanentalism (I don't know even know if I spelled those right...which led to something about amillennialism and so I stopped asking, I think I was getting dumber instead of smarter, they were trying really hard to help me, it's just that I'm light years behind them in understanding that stuff). *Enter PDT*
He listens for awhile and remarks a bit on the conversation and then says...(get ready)
"you know guys I was praying for this class this morning and I told the Lord, if these questions can really get the students to the point of discussing Eugene Peterson I know I've really made an impact...*now raising his hands to the sky exclaims* THANK YOU JESUS!"
We all laughed about as hard as a person could...and then quickly got back on track before he got the ruler out.
Additionally, once we got back together in class he says "So, I'm curious, as a result of these reflective heart searching questions, how many of you reached the place of discussing Eugene Peterson?"
Nothing like a little comedic rebuke from a master...
