Rushing out of the house this morning, I got a little over-zealous in the perfume department. So, I'm sitting here in my office with self-induced scent saturation and the headache to prove it.
In recent days I had a chance conversation in regard to the perfume/cologne paradigm. There seems to be varied opinion on the topic of "to smell or not to smell." So, I'd like to use the red couch to conduct a little quasi-experimental research in the area. I'm especially interested in how this data will reflect the differences in opinion between the genders. The questions I pose to you?
1. Are you smelly (a wearer of cologne or perfume)? If yes, are you a lifer or have you adopted the practice in adulthood?
2. Please provide the basis for your position to answer #1.
3. Would you rather a person of opposite gender be smelly or no? A simple yes or no will suffice, this is a family friendly venue and I know some of you all too well (I'll not name names).
Fear not, I will answer my own quesitons, once sufficient data sets have been accumulated. I believe my answering prior to data collection could create a confounding variable affect and thus disort the delicate methodology I have constructed for this study.
I know this research won't have an effect on global hunger, save the hump-back whales or solve a variety of other important world issues. But, it will however, if you answer the way I want you to, give me the opportunity to say - "See, I told you so," and that's really all I care about right now.

1. Occasionally I smell...although you know when I do...usually after a workout session with Tony...but I digress. I think I started smelling in 8th grade
2. 8th grade was when I started playing volleyball
3. Opposite gender - a drop of smelly; smelling like one showered in Old Spice is nasty.
1. Always, won't leave home without it. (And on the off chance I've forgotten, I generally have an emergency bottle in my car.) I remember starting to wear perfume daily at about 11 or 12.
2. I like to smell good. I like people telling me I smell good. I like to notice others smelling good, so I figure they'd prefer me smelling good too.
3. Well since I know for a fact that I am one of those "not named names", I'll keep it short...YEEEEESSSSSSS!
I could write a book on my opinions about perfume/cologne wearing, but since this is your blog Mel, I'll leave it at this.
1. I mostly smell like caramel (or syrup, if your smeller's off). I wore cologne in high school (Polo, then Drakkar), but have been off it for years and years.
2. Uh... I just try to not smell offensive. Smelling actually good? Seems like work.
3. Mmm, yes. A good perfume is a good thing.
1)Occasionally smell...if I remember. Since I was in Jr High like most girls I suppose.
2)I like good smelliness but too much and certain kinds quickly give me a headache.
3)Whatever floats their boat.
I love your red couch!! :)
1) I rarely remember to put on perfume, but I usually have a lotion scent.
2) I like things that smell nice. :)
3) Smelly!! Curve is amazing! Axe. Yeah, definitely smelly!

1. I wear pefume but especially when I am going someplace special. I don't really wear it to work because of the number of people with breathing problems. I have been wearing it for so long that I cannot remember when I started to wear it.
2. It makes me feel good and I like feeling girly.
3. Guys who wear cologne is nice but not necessary he just doesn't need to take a bath in it.
1. It is rare that I forgot to put on perfume. I'd guess I've been wearing it since middle school or high school.
2. I like smelling good and I can be kinda girly.
3. Yes. I know you said a simple yes, will suffice, HOWEVER it must be said that wearing too much is worse than wearing nothing. Enough said.
1. No. Well, rarely.
2. Just not something I think of doing in general. Sometimes gives me a headache.
3. Occasionally.
I'd just like to point out at this stage in the research...I'm finding this very interesting. 25% of respondents are male; 100% of male respondents are not smelly. YET, 75% of respondents are female; 100% of female respondents prefer smelly men. Hmmmm...I see some potential implications developing here, but it's still too early in the study to make any definitive proclaimations.
Jonell,
Thanks! Glad you came, and had fun!
1-2.) I wear cologne about 60% of the time. I don't really remember when I started, sometime in High School when being appealing to the ladies seemed like it should start mattering more.
3.) Ya, a perfume that compliments can be really nice. But it isn't just the perfume; hair products, body chemistry, and even laundry detergent & fabric softener all add to a person's "scent aura" and affects whether you think they smell nice or not. I think I agree with most people that too much is very bad.
Time for Melissa to give her opinion!
Dana, I'm still holding out for some more data, I think I'll cease and desist collection tomorrow afternoon, so you can expect my answers after church. Evidentally the only reason people look at my blog is to know when the next time I'm feeding them is - :(
Ah, not the case! Your loved for many other reasons too! ;) Thanks again for hosting another fabulous get together! Sorry I left so "early" but I was tired. I hope Father of the Bride was entertaining for all! I'll see you tomorrow hun! Love ya!
1. Only after I actually shave, i.e. razor. Very light.
2. Um, started shaving around 13 I think. Started heavy, didn't know better.
3. Very light perfume is okay for her.
4. I figure its "her" choice as to the amount/brand of cologne. I really don't care what I wear as long as it is light and doesn't affect my own sinuses.
Thanks again for letting me stay. I have to agree with Dana that you are loved for more than the sweet treats that you prepare.
So did I mention that I go crazy trying to figure out who anonymous comments come from?
Ok so I'm guessing I've gotten what I'm going to get so Here's my asnwers.
1. Yes, unless the world stops producing light clean scents I'll ALWAYS have on perfume.
2. I like clean smells, and HELLO if you've never met me, let me clue you in - not very girly, need all the help I can get - this one's an easy add in.
3. Nothing better than a good smelly guy. What can I say, I'm an olfactory girl.
Again, clean smells though - nothing you've taken a bath in, because if you do - I'll be runnin' to the extra strength tylenol faster than you can say "supracalifragilisticexpialadocious"
Ah the anticipation is over!
1. 2. I am not one who wears perfume on a daily basis. I have no idea why but if I put it on too early it give me a headache and makes me sneeze and then my nose is running half the morning! sigh It makes me sad because I do feel like it does make you more girly! sigh
3. I enjoy the scent of a man. Let me clarify. Not sweat, or B.O. but what he smells like. Again, after he has cleaned up. I guess it is more of just a clean smell.
1. Yep, I am smelly. I started sometime in high school to impress the ladies!
2. It is always good to stimulate one more of the senses God gave us! Why not smell good too!
3. Yeh, it is good to be smelly, as long as it isnt over the top. You can go too far and give the other person a big headache!
Sorry it took so long to post...I had the scent of the Ocean on me for the past week!
Jeremiah
Guys, it seems to me that we need to go get some cologne, whether we want to or not.
I'd steer away from anything that smells like food.
Sorry, I was mister anonymous.
LOL..so what about the smell of leather? :P
Mup,
Thanks for pointing that out (and although I may have thought this was obvious - I was lovingly reminded this weekend that men don't "get" hints). One small suggestion: PLEASE don't buy the cheap stuff. E.g. - if it cost less than your last video game purchase, gently place it back on the shelf and march yourself over to the Macy's men's cologne counter. Ask the nice lady working for some ideas.
Just tryin' to help y'all out.
(Mel - was that "family friendly" enough?)
That's probably good advice... especially since I tend to buy used videogames and they're fairly cheap...
Wendles - excellent advice...don'tbuy cheap perishables.
Wendles - you crack me up!!! It is very good advise though!
1. Always!! I hardly ever leave the house without perfume.
2. ummm....I think since Jr. High???
3. Definitely
1. yep - lately been using the body spray. although it is cheap, I think it smells good and I have been told that I smell good numerous times.
2. Jr high for me too.
3. Yes! but the "not too much" goes for women too!!!
So can we all agree to tell each other when it is "too much". I think I'm gonna be paranoid now since EVERYONE said it.
And Pete- body spray? seriously? I didn't know they made that for men....
Bodyspray - Tag the adds turn me away. I could use that stuff and couldn't draw a gathering of flies.
The expensive stuff Wendles? Most interesting. And much like some ladies, body chemistry modifies the smell. And if I'm going for a target smell... bleh, this is too confusing for me.. I'll just stick with something simple.
Oh, and unscented guys smell when freshly showered? Other than the smell of soap? I've heard this once before in years gone by...but never understood.
Boggles the mind.
Petey and Sir Chad:
I'm not saying a $2 fast food burger isn't good occassionally.
BUT....
A $20 Filet Mignon, mmm mmm, is sooooooo much better.
Just sayin'
Wendy!
I'm sure what you meant to say was "a $2 candle is fine sometimes but a $25 candle is sooooooo much beetter."
seriously Wendles! mmm mmm?
lol
Lest I remind ye that push the limits - FAMILY FRIENDLY VENUE - I will delete at will!
Okay, I'm officially disappointed. I thought Wendles originally said, "find a lady confidant to help you pick some cologne out". So, I asked Wendles..and she stood me up! I feel downgraded and unloved..now I must remain wearing the cheap stuff. She expects me to just up and walk up to a lady working in the shop for a good suggestion. Ack! *Snif* Wendles hates me.
:)
