The Family is coming, The Family is coming...

I can't remember if it's one lantern by land and two by sea, or if it was the other way around, but I'm too lazy to google it.

My parents and my favorite brother are coming to visit this weekend. I love 'um, I do. I just don't ever know what to do with 'um.

I haven't been home since Christmas. This is a record that my mom would rather not exist. I've NEVER went anywhere near this long without going home for a visit (mom would like me to do something about breaking the streak). But, anyway, now that I have the house, they've been more inclined to come for visits. Which, I'm glad of. It's nice for them to come see my life here. I just feel like home here, more than I ever have since leaving home...it's kinda weird, but very nice, all the same. (thanks to all you Faith folks for helping that feeling along, by the way)

So, the last time they were all here it was Dad's bithday, we went to the Purdue/Illinois basketball game. Bob and I bought the tickets as a gift. Which by the way, was probably the best gift we've ever gotten my dad. I think he really enjoyed it. He's impossible to buy things for...

Anyway, the reason for this post...

The visit will go something like this:

Arrival...

Mom/Dad: So, how's things going?
Me/Bob: Good, good nothing to complain about
Mom: Do you have any diet coke?
Me: No, still don't really drink much pop mom (subsequent trip to purchase her drug of choice)

Return from emergency diet coke run...

Mom/Dad: Do we need to do any work, like fix the mower (yes), till (yes) edge the yard (yes).
Me/Bob: Ya lets do that.

2 hours later...

Mom/Dad: So, how's things going?
Me/Bob: Pretty good now that all the work is done...(stroll in and sit on the couch)
Bob: I'm hitting the cookies again (while the rest of us watch in amazement that he can consume 4 dozen cookies in a short weekend, it happens, honest. But, he runs, he can get a way with it, LOSER!)

Me: *so, now what...*

We have a tendency to sit around and look at each other while I catch up with my romping around with Gus (my ex-dog that now stays with the folks). So, if anybody has any excellent suggestions for the "still not so familiar with Lafayette happenings girl," I'm all ears.

By the way, just scratched them again, Wendy. :)

That's why when my parents come up this summer they are flying into Chicago. We're going to spend a couple days up there before coming back to Ltown. Bucus there is nothing to do here.

What do you mean there's nothing to do in this town? There's...... and then there's.....well, ok, maybe there isn't much to do in this town. BUT! There's always Indiana Beach! Oh, sorry nevermind.

I remember one time feeling really frustrated because I didn't know what to do with my mom...seems like after the usual conversations and hearing the same stories again and again she didn't have anything new to say...so I started asking her questions about when she was a little girl, how she met my dad, what their life was like as newlyweds, etc....I tried to write down what she said so that someday I can pass it on to her grandchildren. I actually got one of those memory books but you could use any kind of notebook. And maybe you could even ask them to bring pictures next time to add to the book. I realize that isn't really a "do" thing but maybe it could spark some new conversation.
Whatever you do, I hope you have a great time together. Love, M

I don't know...sometimes my dad brings his golf clubs and mom and I always go shopping. Yes, it's hard with parents...but at least you do productive things like cook.
